Series Description:
The documents in this series are related to cases concerning estate and property settlements, divorce, debt, damages, and delinquent taxes, among other matters. Cases are arranged alphabetically by the plaintiff’s surname. Some later cases were assigned case numbers and the corresponding number has been included. Records include correspondence, depositions, decrees, subpoenas, transcripts, and exhibits, among other types. Many historical issues can be studied in these cases, including family history, slavery and emancipation, domestic relations, business affairs, the Civil War, and many other topics. Although Chancery Court began in 1836 in Washington County, there are various exhibits in these files dated much earlier. There are additional court case files that are currently unprocessed and not identified here. Court case files are permanent records.
